More transparency when choosing tyres
Tyres have a large impact on fuel-related emissions. That is why the EU has introduced new labelling for all vehicle tyres. As part of its commitment to cutting greenhouse gas emissions from road transport.
The new EU Tyre Label is easy to follow, and offers you greater transparency as a consumer. You can now:
• Choose more fuel-efficient tyres – lowering both your emissions and costs
• Know the wet grip performance of your tyres, for greater road safety
• Access new information about noise levels, helping reduce traffic-related noise pollution
The new labelling includes various icons to help you compare different tyres.
Fuel Efficiency
Key to reducing both CO2 emissions and driving costs.
The fuel efficiency of tyres is measured according to their rolling resistance – in grades ranging from A to E. The lower the rolling resistance, the lower the fuel consumption. Grade A has the lowest rolling resistance, grade E the highest.
Grip in Wet Conditions
Knowing stopping distances is critical to road safety
This relates to the ability of your tyres to stop your car quickly on wet roads. Each grade represents a shift in stopping distance when braking. Grade A has the shortest stopping distance, grade E the longest.
Rolling Noise
Measuring external noise emissions in decibels
This icon is designed to regulate the future EU mandatory limit on tyre noise pollution. Grades from A to C represent the external rolling noise – where grade A is the quietest and grade C the loudest.
Snow Grip Performance
Proving snow capabilities
Tyres labelled with this "3 peaks and snow" icon are classified as tyres for use in severe snow conditions.
Ice Grip Performance
Nordic winter tyres
Tyres suitable for use on iced surfaces feature this symbol that represents an ice stalagmite.
The new "Regulation (EU) 2020/740 on energy labelling for tyres" will come into effect on 1 May 2021.
Driver Responsibility
Actual fuel savings and road safety depend heavily on the behaviour of drivers. In particular on the following: Eco-driving can significantly reduce fuel consumption. This includes smooth acceleration and use of momentum, avoiding unnecessary idling, turning the engine off when you can, and not exceeding the speed limit. Tyre pressure needs to be regularly checked to optimise fuel efficiency and wet grip. Stopping distances must always be respected.
Local Conditions
From now on tyres might also bear the alpine icon (3PMSF) showing their capabilities in severe snow conditions, or the icon relating to grip in icy conditions. Important: Ice grip tyres are specifically designed for road surfaces covered with ice and compact snow, and should only be used in very severe sub-zero climate conditions. Using this type of tyre in warmer and wetter climates may result in sub-optimal performance, in particular with regard to wet grip, handling and wear.
